ZipNews v0.97 (5/04/93)
Here's a quick review of the features of the ZipNews door:
* Offers high-speed, efficient access to Usenet newsgroups for BBS
callers. Runs as door on PCBoard, Wildcat!, and Waffle BBS systems.
(Actually, when running under Waffle it runs as an "external command.")
* Produces one of two downloadable formats: (1) an ASCII text file of
all new articles contained in newsgroups listed in the caller's JOIN
file, OR (2) a "packet" containing all the new articles in a format
supported by the companion ZipNews Reader (and Mailer, in its registered
form).
* Maintenance of newsgroup selections and last article read pointers
may be accomplished via uploads from the ZipNews reader. (Added in
release, 0.96e). This capability is provided in the SHAREWARE versions
of both the door and the ZipNews reader (no need to register either to
try out this functionality).
* Also accepts news packets created offline by the registered form of
the ZipNews Reader/Mailer and posts the uploaded articles.
* The registered version of the ZipNews Door supports access and transfer
to the caller his/her personal mail. Mail operations include acceptance
of uploaded mail composed on the registered form of the ZipNews Reader.
Mail operations are NOT supported by the unregistered form of the
ZipNews Door.
* On PCBoard and Wildcat! BBS systems (and others soon), ZipNews uses
Waffle's uucp transport mechanism and related utilities for organizing
the news and mail operations. The ZipNews system, beginning with
release 0.96e of the door, and 0.92d of the reader does not require
that the Waffle BBS program (WAFFLE.EXE) be installed. All new user
registrations, establishing of newsgroup selections, and subsequent
changes are handled via commands received in packets from the ZipNews
reader.
* ZipNews is SHARE-compatible, and supports multi-node operation
(unlimited simultaneous BBS node access).
* Allows complete system operator and caller freedom in specifying and
selecting from archiver utilities and file transfer protocols. The
system operator can configure choices of up to 5 different archiving
utilities and up to 10 file transfer protocols. (These limits are
arbitrary and can be increased in the design if there is demand.)
* Handy "local" mode of operation to support system operator testing.
* Caller individual configurations are "remembered" for reference
during subsequent calls.
* Supports RAMDISK work directories for speed and easing the burden
on hard drives. A different directory for each BBS node can be
specified using a single entry in one config file.
* Complete comm port support built-in. Supports non-standard comm
ports. Disables FOSSIL communications to use its own comm
routines. CAUTION: Will not yet work with multi-port boards
requiring special drivers (e.g., DIGIBOARD, ARNET, etc.).
* Includes carrier monitoring & keyboard timeout monitoring. Returns
to BBS in the event of lost carrier or keyboard timeout (3 mins.).
* No fancy graphics in normal operation -- compatible with any/all
caller platforms -- similar to Waffle in this regard (i.e.,
boringly plain!).
* No charge for upgrades to future versions. (Once you have a
registration number, it may be applied to all future upgrades.)
Registration COST: $19.95 (no limit on number of BBS nodes handled).
Registration of the door by sysops includes a FREE registered ZipNews
Reader. (The ZipNews Reader is separately avialable to BBS users. Its
registration fee is $19.95.)
Distributed as uncrippled, fully functional SHAREWARE for news access,
there are no limits on the number of newsgroups handled, number of
articles, etc. To encourage registrations we offer mail processing and
news follow-up operations in the registered version only.
