  2.                         ZipNews v0.97  (5/04/93)

  4. Here's a quick review of the features of the ZipNews door:
  5.  
  6.   * Offers high-speed, efficient access to Usenet newsgroups for BBS
  7.     callers.  Runs as door on PCBoard, Wildcat!, and Waffle BBS systems.
  8.     (Actually, when running under Waffle it runs as an "external command.")
  9.  
  10.   * Produces one of two downloadable formats:  (1) an ASCII text file of
  11.     all new articles contained in newsgroups listed in the caller's JOIN
  12.     file, OR (2) a "packet" containing all the new articles in a format
  13.     supported by the companion ZipNews Reader (and Mailer, in its registered
  14.     form).
  15.  
  16.   * Maintenance of newsgroup selections and last article read pointers
  17.     may be accomplished via uploads from the ZipNews reader.  (Added in
  18.     release, 0.96e).  This capability is provided in the SHAREWARE versions
  19.     of both the door and the ZipNews reader (no need to register either to
  20.     try out this functionality).

  22.   * Also accepts news packets created offline by the registered form of
  23.     the ZipNews Reader/Mailer and posts the uploaded articles.
  24.  
  25.   * The registered version of the ZipNews Door supports access and transfer
  26.     to the caller his/her personal mail.  Mail operations include acceptance
  27.     of uploaded mail composed on the registered form of the ZipNews Reader.
  28.     Mail operations are NOT supported by the unregistered form of the
  29.     ZipNews Door.

  31.   * On PCBoard and Wildcat! BBS systems (and others soon), ZipNews uses
  32.     Waffle's uucp transport mechanism and related utilities for organizing
  33.     the news and mail operations.  The ZipNews system, beginning with
  34.     release 0.96e of the door, and 0.92d of the reader does not require
  35.     that the Waffle BBS program (WAFFLE.EXE) be installed.  All new user
  36.     registrations, establishing of newsgroup selections, and subsequent
  37.     changes are handled via commands received in packets from the ZipNews
  38.     reader.

  40.   * ZipNews is SHARE-compatible, and supports multi-node operation
  41.     (unlimited simultaneous BBS node access).
  42.  
  43.   * Allows complete system operator and caller freedom in specifying and
  44.     selecting from archiver utilities and file transfer protocols.  The
  45.     system operator can configure choices of up to 5 different archiving
  46.     utilities and up to 10 file transfer protocols.  (These limits are
  47.     arbitrary and can be increased in the design if there is demand.)
  48.  
  49.   * Handy "local" mode of operation to support system operator testing.
  50.  
  51.   * Caller individual configurations are "remembered" for reference
  52.     during subsequent calls.
  53.  
  54.   * Supports RAMDISK work directories for speed and easing the burden
  55.     on hard drives.  A different directory for each BBS node can be
  56.     specified using a single entry in one config file.
  57.  
  58.   * Complete comm port support built-in.  Supports non-standard comm
  59.     ports.  Disables FOSSIL communications to use its own comm
  60.     routines.  CAUTION: Will not yet work with multi-port boards
  61.     requiring special drivers (e.g., DIGIBOARD, ARNET, etc.).

  63.   * Includes carrier monitoring & keyboard timeout monitoring.  Returns
  64.     to BBS in the event of lost carrier or keyboard timeout (3 mins.).
  65.  
  66.   * No fancy graphics in normal operation -- compatible with any/all
  67.     caller platforms -- similar to Waffle in this regard (i.e.,
  68.     boringly plain!).
  69.  
  70.   * No charge for upgrades to future versions.  (Once you have a
  71.     registration number, it may be applied to all future upgrades.)
  72.  
  73.  Registration COST: $19.95 (no limit on number of BBS nodes handled).
  74.  Registration of the door by sysops includes a FREE registered ZipNews
  75.  Reader.  (The ZipNews Reader is separately avialable to BBS users.  Its
  76.  registration fee is $19.95.)

  78. Distributed as uncrippled, fully functional SHAREWARE for news access,
  79. there are no limits on the number of newsgroups handled, number of
  80. articles, etc.   To encourage registrations we offer mail processing and
  81. news follow-up operations in the registered version only.
